Web photo albums consist of a thumbnail that is linked to an original image file. Various types of navigation are used, but most commonly a “next-back” scheme is used when looking at original files. There are many online versions that allow you to create and store photos as well as software that lets you create and store the web photo album on your computer and then upload it to a website. You may want to try out the Dreamweaver option in our workshop. Feel free to try other formats at your leisure.

Dreamweaver/Fireworks http://www.macromedia.com
Many schools already have Macromedia Dreamweaver software installed. To make a photo album you will need Macromedia Fireworks as well (“MX Studio” version includes Fireworks).To create a photo album:

• Click on the Command menu and then select Create Web Photo Album.
• Follow the prompts.
• Try the feature with 6-10 photos to figure out settings that work best for you.

JAlbum http://jalbum.net
This is well worth a look! With JAlbum you have full control of the look of the generated album, not just color theme and basic layout, still making an album is just a matter of drag and drop + a button click if you prefer to use one of the many existing looks. JAlbum will process your images, make index pages and slide show pages and even upload the final album to the Internet for your friends to see (must have FTP access and login). No extra software is needed to view the albums, -just your web browser.

FlipAlbum® 5 Standard http://www.flipalbum.com/products/fa
FlipAlbum 5 Standard automatically organizes photos into realistic page-flipping albums and lets you create, view, edit and share online your digital albums. In addition to multi-photos and texts per page, MP3 and video playback on any page, you get rapid flipping pages, more themes and borders to choose from. Students would have fun figuring out new ways to use this software.

Publishing Options: Proprietary file that requires viewers to download a browser plug-in. Once plugin loads users view the “book” in a browser window.
